Twinrix comes in three doses, with the second shot being administered 30 days after the first, and the final injection given six months later. The combined vaccination means travellers can reduce the number of shots needed for Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B protection from five to three.
What is my risk?
Your risk depends on several factors: destination, length of trip, and your living conditions. However, the risk of Hepatitis is highest among travellers:
- Visiting or living in rural areas
- Eating and drinking in locations with poor sanitation or unsafe food handling practices
The risk of Hepatitis exists even for travellers going for short periods of time to urban areas, staying in luxury hotels and who follow go
Get vaccinated if you are at risk but are not yet immunized.
Practise safe food and water precautions (CDC)
Wash your hands frequently and use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
What is hepatitis B?
Hepatitis B is caused by a virus that infects the liver. It is one of the most common vaccine-preventable diseases affecting travellers and can cause either acute or chronic infection.
What is hepatitis A?
Hepatitis A is a viral disease that is common in developing countries and is generally associated with poor sanitation and poor hygiene. It is one of the most common vaccine-preventable illnesses in travellers.
Twinrix Vaccine Timeline
It is important that you make an appointment with your Summit Travel Health Specialist at least one month before your travels, as a single dose of Twinrix will provide only 70% protection against the virus. In some circumstances an accelerated series of shots can be taken in a single month. Getting the combined vaccination does not lead to any increased side effects.
